Job Purpose/Summary:
Create, innovate, develop and exploit strategic partnerships and commercial opportunities to enhance the company’s revenues through existing and potential new partners/customers with whom the company will target, initiate and develop business relationships or partnerships. Create, implement, and manage the company’s strategic and multi-faceted corporate relations matters including marketing and customer relations/experience programs and the company’s overall communications (internal and external) in support of the company’s vision, mission and values to further business objectives and enhance revenues consistent with the company’s applicable strategic plan. Reporting directly to the Vice President, External & Legal Affairs, this position also assists in maintaining positive relationships with customers, as well as other businesses and stakeholders within the various communities that the company serves and is tasked with developing strategies, projects and programs to improve the overall reputation of the company.
Essential Functions:
- Create, innovate, develop and exploit strategic partnerships and/or commercial opportunities to increase the company’s income through existing and potential new partners/customers with whom the company will target, initiate and develop business relationships or partnerships;
- Ensure that the company’s leadership team is appropriately advised of and aligned regarding strategic partnerships, commercial activities, market opportunities, status, trends and business developments;
- Develop strategies and action plans to realize commercial opportunities and minimize risks to the business;
- Produce and deliver a commercial action plan which supports the company’s overall strategic objectives, achieving sales targets and using appropriate customer relations or experience initiatives to take corrective measures, as needed;
- Provide oversight and strategies of all periodic reports and action plans on customer relations/experience activities and the development, tracking, maintenance, and reporting of desired metrics to measure effectiveness of customer relations/experience services.
- Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the company’s services and potential services as well as its competitor’s services;
- Administrating the company’s key commercial agreements, and managing partnerships with key stakeholders;
- Obtain customer feedback on service quality and share with the leadership team and other key staff members to continuously improve the business operations;
- Provides ad-hoc and ongoing decision support to the leadership team by engaging in data analysis, risk/return analysis, research and market assessment activities for varying business scenarios and opportunities;
- Identify new market opportunities and take the lead on constructing a robust and successful business proposal that secure deals, contracts and long term relationships, as necessary;
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality throughout; on current business activities, short-long term plans, proposals under scrutiny and any other activity related to business;
- Ensure areas of service obligations are delivered timely, and in a way that are consistent with the company’s strategic goals and initiatives;
- Coordinate with the government affairs group in monitoring industry legislative developments and develop and implement strategic changes in order to maintain compliance and maximize business performance;
- Develop and maintain an excellent rapport with key stakeholders and partners such as customers, vendors, community and business organizations, and government officials;
- Provide commercial and business development support/advice to other departments;
- Assist in representing company at industry, business, and community events as necessary;
- Perform other related duties as directed by the Vice President, External and Legal Affairs.
Corporate relations
Develops and implements the company’s overall strategic marketing and social media plan, including strategies and tactics necessary to build a robust brand image and market awareness.
- Implements traditional and digital marketing campaigns, as necessary, to support the company’s sales and customer experience efforts for target markets.
- Oversees the overall strategy and execution of the design, management and maintenance of the company’s website and applicable social or digital media platforms.
- Leads and manages the company’s Sales/Business Relations and Customer Relations/Experience teams in the administration of the overall Customer Relations Management (CRM) and Customer Experience Management (CEM) databases or portals, as prudent and necessary to address, among other things, , customer feedback or complaints, data maintenance, campaign coordination, report generation, forecasting-related activities, sales travel, town hall events, and customer outreach/visitation.
- Coordinates participation at targeted community, sales, trade and/or industry events.
- Facilitates the development and creation of sales/business relations and marketing/communications and customer relations/experience (internal and external) materials.
- Manages the company’s overall budget relating to sales/business relations and marketing/communications and customer relations/experience, including annual advertising in trade journals, maritime publications, etc., evaluating ROI and maximizing value.
- Measures and reports effectiveness of marketing campaigns against revenue enhancement or sales goals.
- Coordinate the alignment of the company’s marketing and communications with Saltchuk Resources Inc. and Saltchuk Marine Shared Services, as appropriate and applicable.
- Develops and implements short-term and long-term strategies and content for the company’s internal and external communications.
- Develops the overall strategy and development and communications content for the company’s website and for the overall corporate communications platform, as necessary.
- Develops communications materials and messaging on local, state, and national issues affecting the company.
- Responds to media requests for information and implements earned media campaign; produces news releases, news materials, fact sheets, online content, and program announcements.
- Coordinates strategy and objectives for the company’s presence at public and community relations events such as charitable fundraisers, christenings, and maritime industry events.
- Manages the company’s communications for customer appreciation events, major media events or news-related activities.
- Assists in writing and publishing monthly employee newsletter and other internal communications as requested.
- Manages and coordinates crisis communication efforts, including acting as media spokesperson.
- Builds and fosters long-term relationships with various entities including the media, community members, and other business and industry leaders.
- Follows social, economic, and political trends with potential impact to the organization, and makes recommendations to enhance the company’s image on the basis of those trends.
Leadership:
- Direct and supervise the leads of various teams, including Sales and Business Relations, Customer Relations and Experience, and Marketing and Communications
- Provides direction and leadership to achieve the company Core Values, Mission and Safety Vision, particularly as it relates to enhanced revenues and improved customer service and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Computer proficiency in and ability to utilize all of Windows and MS Professional Office standard applications.
- Ability to travel as needed.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of at least ten (10) years of strategic and/or management level experience overseeing commercial/business development, marketing, branding, community or customer relations/experience and/or communications (internal and external).
Previous strategic and/or management level experience with development and implementation of strategic partnerships and/or commercial opportunities, marketing plans, brand maintenance, advertising and/or earned media, digital marketing, and crisis communication preferred.
Desktop publishing and community relations experience preferred.
Working Conditions: Work is mostly performed in an office environment sitting at a desk utilizing computer keyboard, telephones and office equipment for an extended periods. May be required to work more than a normal workweek, including weekends and holidays. Travel and attending community and stakeholder events may also be required. Regular and predicable attendance is a requirement.
Physical/Mental Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and bend at the neck and waist. Constant use of hands or fingers; talking, and repetitive motions of hand and wrists. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The workday usually has a high number of interruptions and priority changes necessitating the need to remain flexible and focused in order to accomplish tasks. Occasional lifting of 20 lbs.
