Saltchuk Marine is seeking a talented Systems Engineer to join our IT team. As a leading marine transportation company, Saltchuk Marine operates a diverse fleet of vessels and relies on robust IT systems to support our operations. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our IT infrastructure to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security.

The System Engineer will report directly to the IT Manager.

Responsibilities:

System Design and Implementation: Design, deploy, and maintain scalable and resilient IT systems, including networks, servers, storage, and virtualization infrastructure. Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, assess technical feasibility, and architect solutions that meet business needs.

Network Administration: Configure, optimize, and troubleshoot network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points. Monitor network performance and implement measures to ensure high availability, performance, and security.

Server Administration: Manage Windows and Linux servers, including installation, configuration, patching, and performance tuning. Implement server virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) to optimize resource utilization and streamline server management.

Cloud Computing: Evaluate, implement, and manage cloud-based services and solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure) to enhance scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Migrate on-premises workloads to the cloud and leverage cloud-native technologies to modernize IT infrastructure.

Security and Compliance: Implement security best practices and standards to protect IT systems and data from cyber threats and vulnerabilities. Conduct security assessments, audits, and penetration tests to identify and remediate security risks. Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, NIST).

Monitoring and Performance Management: Deploy and configure monitoring tools to monitor the health, performance, and availability of IT systems and services. Analyze performance metrics, troubleshoot issues, and implement optimizations to enhance system performance and reliability.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity:  Maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure the resilience and continuity of IT operations in the event of disruptions or disasters. Perform regular backups, testing, and documentation of recovery procedures.

Help Desk Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a small team of help desk technicians, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities. Coordinate help desk activities, including ticket management, prioritization, and escalation, to ensure timely resolution of user issues and requests. Foster a collaborative and customer-focused work environment that emphasizes quality service delivery and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field or relevant certifications (e.g., MCSE, Network Plus, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator) preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in systems engineering or related roles, with a proven track record of designing, implementing, and managing complex IT infrastructure environments may substitute education requirements.
  • Experience automating tasks via scripting, PowerShell, API’s or python.
  • Experience implementing and managing Intune.
  • Proficiency in network administration, server administration, virtualization, and cloud computing technologies (AWS and Azure).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience with security best practices, compliance frameworks, and ITIL/ITSM processes.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of information technology

Compensation: 

The salary range for this position is $102,978 and $154,476 annually. The expected hiring range for this position is between $110,000 and $130,000 annually.

  • This position will accrue 15 days of vacation a year. Accrued vacation will be vested and available for use after successfully completing six (6) months of service.
