The Second Mate reports directly to the Master and carries out all the Master’s lawful orders. In the absence of the Master the Second Mate reports directly to the Chief Mate. The Master is always available for consultation to help the Second Mate discharge his/her duties.

In all matters which affect or may affect the safe operation of the vessel and/or the environment, the Second Mate shall:

·         Comply with the Company’s MS requirements related to the position;

·         Identify potential vessel hazards associated with deck operations and advise the Master accordingly;

·         Notify the Master immediately of any defects that may affect vessel safety or put the environment at risk;

·         Instruct and orient cadets/new crew/ratings as directed by Master;

·         Inspect and maintain environmental and safety related equipment on board the tug and record inspections in appropriate log;

·         Maintain charts and nautical publications, when directed by the Master;

·        Supervise a Cargo Watch, performing cargo operations and PIC duties as required. This includes supervising Unlicensed Personnel assigned to cargo watch;

·         Stand a wheelhouse watch, when directed by the Master;

·        Assist the Chief Mate to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel;

·        Complete Mate’s Tour of Duty and Barge Tour of Duty, as required;

·        Under the supervision of the Chief Mate, assist with all barge operations to include cargo preparations and maintenance.
