Director, Communications & Marketing

Saltchuk

Emily Reiter joined TOTE Maritime Alaska in 2011 as a contractor. After two years with the TOTE Group, Saltchuk requested her help on a branding project. Another year passed while she worked for both companies before the Saltchuk Corporate Home office offered her a permanent position as Director of Communications and Marketing.

“It was an exciting opportunity to work across all six lines of business to build an identity as a family of companies.”

What advantages do you see to growing within the same family of companies rather than seeking external opportunities?

The Saltchuk family of companies is six separate lines of business composed of 35 independent operating companies. That’s 35 separate organizations that are building teams, implementing programs, and working to continuously improve. In many large companies, there’s a distinct path that must be followed to advance—if you’re someone who likes that kind of structure, there’s plenty of places that offer it.

Saltchuk companies offer advancement opportunities not only within the company you work for but across the family of companies. There are rewards for those with a more entrepreneurial spirit and desire to grow. I’ve found that taking on “stretch” projects and working within cross-company teams has been a great way to learn and build a network of people who know what you’re capable of.

What similarities have you found in the culture between Saltchuk companies?

Coming from a business unit to the corporate home gave me such great perspective and insight into the deep pride felt by the employees of our companies. There’s a special connection that comes from providing essential services. Employees are purpose-driven. They care deeply about those we serve and the success of the company. I saw that at TOTE, and I see that at every single one of the 35 companies that make up Saltchuk.
