About the Role 

 

As a Mate, you’ll be an essential part of our mission to provide safe and reliable maritime services. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team that values professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement. 

 

What You’ll Do  

 

  • Essential Functions – The primary responsibility of this position is assisting the captain with towing, docking, and unloading of barge and other vessels, from port to port. Other duties include steering, operating, pushing, and pulling barges as directed by the captain to its perspective destinations and/or berths. While towing, attention is focused on water depth, weather, surging and other traffic, keeping the tow wire, which at times is at great length, clear of the bottom, navigational aids, and other vessels. Deck duties include making & breaking tow, line handling and directing deckhands as necessary. 
  • Administrative Understand and comply with Foss policies and procedures. Maintain vessel documents within Helm. Enter hours worked for crew members onboard & maintain vessel logs. Complete project specific paperwork as directed. 
  • Leadership – Encourage career development and job skills training. Plans, organizes information, defines, and prioritizes tasks and develops resources to meet organizational goals. Develop the necessary techniques to work towards common objectives using effective directing, motivating and development skills for maximum employee performance. Leads by example by upholding all safety procedures and protocols set forth in the Safety Management System. Willing to speak up & utilize stop-work authority. 
  • Safety – Assist with inspection of Tugs; ensure compliance and learning the Foss SMS. Proper procedures for handling emergency situations, the decisions that need to be made based on what needs to be done, including the notifications that are essential and must be completed. 

 

What We’re Looking For 

 

  • Required LicensingMust have a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document or Merchant Mariner Credential (minimum USCG 500 GT Mate upon Oceans License with Mate of Towing Vessels upon Oceans and STCW). Must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), Passport & USCG issued Medical Certificate. 
  • Preferred skills – Knowledge of port operations, logistics software, or marine engineering. 
  • CommunicationDevelop excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with contractors and customers. This includes the ability to translate information received from contractors and customers into Marine Operations using sound decisions. Provide directive on deck as necessary.
