GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES (not all-inclusive):
This role is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered heavy equipment used in port operations – including top loaders, forklifts, and other specialized machinery, as required. Professional customer service demeanor while on the job is a must. Employees are required to express leadership qualities and maintain an excellent physical condition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and electrical components on various heavy equipment
- Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections to ensure optimal equipment performance and safety compliance
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts usage, and work orders using maintenance software or logs
- Troubleshoot equipment issues in a timely and efficient manner to minimize downtime
- Operate diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical failures
- Collaborate with supervisors and other lead team members to prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks
- Comply with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Provide support during emergency equipment breakdowns and after-hours repairs when needed
- Other tasks and projects, as assigned
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Vocational or technical certification in diesel mechanics or related field preferred
- Minimum 5 years of verifiable hands-on experience as diesel mechanic and/or working in port or terminal operations
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and hydraulic systems
- Certified and proficient in operating Forklifts of all sizes.
- Use of basic hand tools.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Familiarity with Taylor, Liebherr, Caterpillar, Komatsu, and/or other heavy equipment brands commonly used in the transportation, terminal handling and maritime industry.
- Must have excellent communication skills, above average hand eye coordination.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands, handle, or feel; bending and kneeling, and reach with hands and arms. Required to lift-up to 60 lbs. on an intermittent basis. Employees are required to work in physically demanding weather conditions such as extreme heat.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position will perform their duties outdoors exposed to changing environmental conditions. Employees are expected to work in stormy weather excluding lightning, extreme heat, and below freezing temperatures.
