TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, a leader in safe and reliable service to Puerto Rico, is seeking a Safety Manager to join the team at our Jacksonville, FL office.
In this position you will:
be responsible for the implementation and improvement of Safety objectives at TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico. Responsibilities include overall administration and implementation of the group’s objectives in conjunction with company goals and objectives to include teaming with supporting units to successfully achieve those objectives. This position is also responsible for ensuring TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico meets requirements and continually improves the Integrated Management System (IMS) covering Quality (ISO 9001), Environment (ISO 14001), Health & Safety (ISO 45001), Corporate Responsibility (MVO 8000) and Compliance (ISO 37301) Management Systems by monitoring, reviewing and evaluating these systems.
Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Lead the organization in implementation of new safety strategies designed to eliminate injury.
- Monitor, evaluate and ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods (both internally and externally) and procedures of stevedore vendor in relation to safety.
- Management responsibility for certifying stevedore contractor subscribes to TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and TOTE, Inc. safety initiatives designed to eliminate injuries.
- Management responsibility for the services and activities of Record Retention.
- Promote a safety culture within the organization by training employees on safety topics, planning reward and recognition of safety achievements and publicizing safety goals, targets and initiatives.
- Communicate and document compliance resolutions on matters relating to safety.
- Ensure all personnel involved with Safety are adequately trained to fulfill their assigned responsibility and plan for training as needed. Develop and record training requirements and roles required to be trained.
- Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned functional areas related to Safety.
- Develop, administrate and control of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico’s annual Plan for Safety financial commitments and ensure that expenditures and funds are managed appropriately.
- Attend and participate in professional group meetings; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment; incorporate new developments as appropriate.
- Coordinate with Saltchuk and TOTE, Inc. on organization-wide Safety Program.
- Directly supervise non-supervisory employees. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues.
- Attend, lead, and direct BCP requirements. To include port coordination calls, TSI vessel coordination, organization-wide BCP developments, and communication to and in the organization.
- Develop and maintain programs to enable TOTE to comply with IMS programs
- All other duties as required
The ideal candidate will have:
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Certifications):
- Bachelor’s degree degree preferred
- OSHA certificate or safety certification preferred
- 5 years of maritime or vessel experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of marine transportation and marine terminal operations preferred
- Knowledge of basic statistical analysis
- Ability to engage adult learners
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with and influence employees at all levels.
- Ability to travel as needed to effectively facilitate duties
- Ability to devote required time needed to include nights, holidays and weekends as required to facilitate duties
- Knowledge of applicable legal and other requirements
- Strong analytical and problem resolution abilities
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
- Detail and deadline oriented
- Adaptable to rapid change
- Ability to work independently and handle ambiguity
- Results oriented with the ability to bring teams and individuals together to achieve targets and goals

- Computer literate, with the ability to utilize standard software applications and proficient in Windows and MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Infopath, Visio and Excel).
