Responsible for a wide range of complex naval architecture and engineering duties on a variety of projects that the engineering division of Foss Maritime Company supports. 

 

Essential Functions:                                                                              

  • Provides engineering and design services under the direction and supervision of the director, senior naval architects and project managers.
  • Engineering work is focused primarily in naval architecture, including vessel design, structural design and analysis, stability analysis, vessel modification and refurbishment plans and specifications, regulatory analysis and other naval architecture and engineering services.
  • Supports engineering services for international and domestic marine transportation projects including heavy sealifts as well as concept, feasibility and design services for new vessels and services in existing and developing markets for Foss Maritime.
  • Provides naval architecture support for applicable civil engineering and construction clients for design and construction of inland, waterfront and marine infrastructure projects.
  • Supports Foss Maritime Company and other operating companies under Saltchuk and Saltchuk Marine in development of vessel construction, modification, operations and transportation projects.
  • Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong engineering background, skill, knowledge and experience with work supervised under the director and senior engineers for design and engineering products.
  • Excellent communication skills with clients, internal divisions of Foss Maritime Company and other staff.
  • General knowledge of a wide range of commercial vessels.
  • Ability to support development of vessel arrangements and to assess feasibility, concept and detail design level of marine vessels, as well as evaluations of and modifications to specific portions of vessels.
  • Ability to support development of contract plans, specifications, and estimates for commercial and Foss projects.
  • Ability to support development of structural design and engineering calculations for vessel construction and modification.
  • Ability to perform trim and stability calculations and reports for marine vessels and floating equipment using GHS or other software.
  • Ability to generate vessel design and modification drawings using AutoCAD or other software to support design, modifications, design studies, and contract drawings.
  • General understanding of U.S. Coast Guard and marine classification society rules and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. This position generally requires a Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture, a Washington EIT or similar registration, and 5 years of experience in a naval architecture or marine engineering related position. 
  2. A Master’s degree in naval architecture is desirable. 
  3. A current Washington Professional Engineering Certificate or similar registration is also desirable.

Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily in an office environment with frequent visits to client facilities, shipyards, and vessels.  Must be able to access all areas of shipyard and company property including administration building, shipyard and shipyard offices, drydocks, and terminal in all types of weather.  Use shipyard safety equipment, such as hard hat and safety glasses is required.  Travel would normally consist of regular short term trips to visit clients and for vessel surveys and ship checks, however, some extended travel is possible for off-site consulting, owners representation and construction support.  Occasional overnight travel, overtime and on-call status is required. May be required to work more than a normal workweek, including weekends.  Regular and predictable attendance is required.

 

Physical/Mental Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit/stand; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee must

occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Ability to move between buildings, ascend/descend stairs and go outdoors in all kinds of weather.  Also for vessel and site visits, one needs the ability to climb ladders and over bulwarks.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Compensation

Pay for this position will be between $79,164-$130,452 annually.

Incentive Compensation Plan

This position may eligible for an Incentive Compensation Plan bonus of up to 15% of base pay, subject to Company and individual performance and per company policy. Individuals hired/transferred during the year will be eligible to receive a pro rata share after six (6) months of service in the event that a bonus is paid out. 

Shoreside Vacation

This position will accrue 10 days of vacation a year. Accrued vacation will be vested and available for use after successfully completing six (6) months of service.
