Job Summary:
The Business Intelligence Analyst supports NorthStar Energy’s business intelligence and data visualization initiatives for owned operating companies and future acquisitions/new markets within Strategic Services. This role assists in projects from ideation to implementation spanning commodity markets, telematics, logistics optimization, sales/gross margin, and other operating metrics. The Business Intelligence Analyst collaborates with cross-functional teams to support NorthStar Energy’s overall operating, safety, and financial objectives. This position reports to the Director of Commercial and Analytics.
Essential Functions:
Support Data and Reporting Initiatives:
- Develop a working understanding of various domains, software platforms, servers, and departments within the company.
- Assist in developing, refining, and troubleshooting data sources and reporting requirements by collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Build queries and support data models to expand operational metrics with accuracy.
- Serve as a resource to support analytics and KPIs that help inform business decisions.
- Work closely with the Information Technology (IT) Data team to support reporting requirements and ensure data accuracy within the data warehouse architecture.
Build Business and Operational Insight:
- Partner with operations management to design, develop, and maintain performance metrics and dashboards used across the organization to monitor and improve business performance.
- Develop familiarity with current and future software platforms to support data-driven decision-making, including the adoption of AI.
- Collaborate with IT to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data presented in reports and dashboards.
Help Solve Business Problems:
- Apply analytical skills to help identify business problems and assist in developing solutions with business partners.
- Support ad-hoc analysis and data exploration using large datasets to uncover insights.
- Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to support business decisions.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Economics, or a related field.
- 2–4 years of experience in business intelligence, data analysis, or data visualization.
- Proficiency in automated data visualization tools such as Power BI, Power Query, or similar platforms required.
- Self-motivation and initiative to develop an understanding of commodity markets (CME NYMEX, S&P, Dow Jones OPIS), NorthStar’s operations, and underlying data sources.
- Experience working with operational, trading, or FP&A teams to develop KPIs and dashboards.
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and methodologies.
- Strong SQL skills for querying and manipulating datasets.
- Exposure to Microsoft Data Services including Azure, Fabric, serverless SQL, Synapse, ETL Data Pipelines, or APIs preferred.
- Understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts.
- Familiarity with macroeconomic trends is a plus.
