Position Summary

The LNG Barge General Utility is responsible for supporting the general maintenance, preservation, and cleanliness of the LNG barge. This role performs routine steel preservation, surface preparation, painting, housekeeping, and operational support tasks to ensure the vessel remains safe, compliant, and operational condition.

The LNG Barge General Utility reports directly to the Lead LNG Tankerman PIC and supports overall barge operations as required.

Essential Functions

  • Promote and uphold the TOTE Services Safety Culture, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures while onboard or representing the company.
  • Perform vessel preservation activities, including cleaning, sanding, scraping, blasting, and chemically treating metal, wood, and fiberglass surfaces.
  • Apply primers, paints, varnishes, and specialized marine coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
  • Mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer and company specifications.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe setup of work areas.
  • Always maintain vessel cleanliness and general housekeeping standards.
  • Move and handle ladders, paint containers, hoses, lines, and related equipment in a marine environment.
  • Assist with inventory control and notify your supervisor when paint or maintenance supplies require replenishment.
  • Support general LNG barge maintenance activities and operational tasks as assigned.  This includes, but is not limited to, participating in LNG Loads and discharges to terminals, vessels and trucks and basic mariner expectations for deck and engine duties for an LNG barge.

 

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with vessel crew members and facility personnel.
  • Participate in onboard drills and required training exercises.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of general marine preservation and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships with crew, vendors, and facility personnel.
  • Physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines, and safely board vessels.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
  • Ability to complete required documentation accurately.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Knowledge of company safety practices and safe work procedures.
  • Effective verbal communication skills, including use of voice and/or hand signals as required in marine environments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Current TWIC
  • Minimum of one (1) year of maritime experience
  • Experience with marine preservation practices strongly preferred

Working Conditions

Work is performed in marine environments, including exterior and interior vessel spaces, with exposure to varying weather conditions, temperatures, and noise levels. Limited work may occur in an office setting.

The position may require extended work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating schedules. Travel may be required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to access vessels, climb ladders and stairs, bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to safely perform physical tasks in a dynamic marine environment
