Position Summary
The LNG Tankerman Assistant PIC supports the day-to-day operations of the LNG tank barge, including the storage, transfer, and vaporization of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This role assists with cargo transfer operations, equipment monitoring, and routine maintenance to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient vessel operations.
The LNG Tankerman Assistant PIC works under the direction of the Lead LNG Tankerman PIC and supports LNG transfers, including operations from truck rack to LNG-propelled vessels.
Essential Functions
- Promote and uphold the TOTE Services Safety Culture, adhering to all company safety policies and procedures while onboard or representing the company.
- Assist with the safe and efficient transfer of LNG between barges, vessels, trucks, and facilities.
- Support completion of required documentation, including barge logs, bills of lading, and gauge reports.
- Assist with LNG tank barge loading and discharge operations as directed.
- Monitor tank levels, pressure, and temperature to support safe cargo management.
- Operate diesel engines, electric motors, compressors, cargo pumps, cryogenic valves, manual and hydraulic booms, and associated cargo handling equipment as assigned.
- Operate or assist in operating reliquification equipment and thermal oxidizer systems.
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspection of LNG tank barge equipment.
- Handle barge lines and anchors, set running and mooring lights, and pump bilge water as required.
- Participate in onboard drills and training exercises, including coordination with tug crews when operationally required.
- Communicate professionally with vessel crews, facility personnel, and management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of LNG cargo transfer operations and general barge maintenance.
- Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities while following direction from the Lead PIC.
- Physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines, and safely board vessels.
- Ability to learn and operate the LNG barge Cargo Transfer Metering System and associated automated instrumentation systems.
- Knowledge of applicable flag, class, state, and local regulatory requirements related to transfer operations.
- Knowledge of company safety practices and safe work procedures.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
- Ability to accurately complete required paperwork and documentation.
- Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Effective verbal communication skills, including use of voice and/or hand signals in marine environments.
Minimum Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
- Preferred endorsements: Liquefied Gas (LG) Assistant, Tankerman LG PIC (Barge), or Tankerman DL PIC
- Tankerman LG PIC or Tankerman LG PIC (Barge) required as a condition of continued employment
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in tank barge, tanker, or similar maritime operations
- Knowledge of LNG liquefaction, storage, shipping, vaporization, or related power plant operations strongly preferred
Working Conditions
Work is performed in marine environments, including interior and exterior vessel spaces, with exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels. Limited work may occur in office settings.
The position may require extended work hours, rotating schedules, and availability during nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel may be required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to access vessels, climb ladders and stairs, bend, stoop, and reach overhead
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
- Ability to safely perform physical duties in dynamic marine environments
