Purpose of Job:
TOTE Services is seeking a Communications Manager to deliver clear, compelling content that elevates our brand and supports business development across government and commercial maritime sectors. This role focuses on strategic writing and storytelling, while also coordinating basic events and branded promotional materials, and managing external agencies for specialized communications support.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer with PR agency or journalism experience, mastery of AP Style, and the ability to translate complex information into accessible, persuasive language under tight deadlines.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promote the TOTE Services safety culture and adhere to all safety guidelines. Make safety a priority in everything we do and seek opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Write, edit, and maintain high-quality content across proposals, press releases, executive summaries, web and social media, ensuring a clear, consistent, and credible brand voice.
- Translate technical and operational information into accessible, persuasive narratives tailored to government agencies, industry partners, and other stakeholders.
- Support proposal development by crafting project descriptions, capability statements, and related materials aligned with Request for Proposal (RFP) requirements.
- Coordinate basic event logistics and oversee procurement of branded promotional materials to enhance company presence.
- Manage external agencies and vendors for specialized communications needs, including graphic design, web development, and media outreach.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with business development, operations, and leadership to identify and shape strategic stories.
- Maintain an organized library of boilerplate content, case studies, bios, and storytelling assets.
- Monitor industry and government trends to inform messaging and ensure alignment with current opportunities and risks.
- Uphold AP Style and the high standards of clarity, professionalism, and tone expected from TOTE and the Saltchuk family of companies.

- Assists the Company in any necessary duties to achieve Company goals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Written Communication- Ability to craft clear, compelling, and grammatically sound content tailored to different audiences and platforms. Mastery of AP Style is essential.
- Storytelling- Skill in shaping narratives that bring technical or complex information to life, supporting brand identity, business development, and engagement.
- Strategic Thinking- Capacity to align messaging with broader business objectives, stakeholder needs, and industry context—especially in regulated or government-facing environments.
- Editorial Judgment- Strong sense of tone, clarity, and consistency in communications, with the ability to edit content for structure, flow, and brand voice.
- Project Management- Ability to manage deadlines, juggle multiple priorities, and coordinate inputs across teams and vendors with minimal supervision.
- Collaboration-Effectiveness in working across departments and functions to gather information, develop content, and refine messaging with input from subject matter experts.
- Agency/Vendor Oversight-Experience working with or managing outside agencies, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with brand standards.
- Industry Awareness-Understanding of the maritime industry, transportation sector, or government contracting space—or the ability to quickly gain relevant context and fluency.
Education, Licensure and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional writing, content development, or communications experience.
- Demonstrated mastery of AP Style and ability to produce high-quality content under tight deadlines.
Preferred Education, Licensure and/or Experience:
- Experience in a PR agency, brand communications, or journalism environment.
- Familiarity with the maritime industry, transportation sector, or government contracting.
- Experience managing external agencies or vendors for communications, design, or media support.
Travel required 20%

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, risk of electrical shock and toxic vapors.
Must travel to perform various duties to include ship visits & audits. Perform these duties acknowledging the possible dangers onboard vessels such as safely maneuvering throughout vessel(s) – i.e. ladders/staircases.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, noise level exposure can increase during visits to the vessels. Proper PPE must be worn.
