TOTE Resources is looking for a Business Unit Controller to join the team at our Jacksonville, FL office. 

 

In this position:

The Business Unit Controller (BUC) is a key member of the Business Unit’s (BU) leadership team, overseeing the financial operations of the company while ensuring compliance with GAAP. This role is instrumental in providing financial insights to enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, and overall BU performance.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with BU and finance shared services team to analyze and execute strategic initiatives, including process changes, system integrations, and capital investments. 
  • Monthly financial close that includes coordinating with operations and the shared services team to ensure timely and accurate financial data, management’s estimates are reasonable, and all balance sheet accounts are reconciled in a timely manner. 
  • As a member of the TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico Senior Leadership team, collaborate across functional areas to drive performance and make informed trade-off decisions. 
  • Anticipate the financial implications of changes in the business and proactively communicate that information to a variety of stakeholders. 
  • Analytical reviews of monthly and annual financial statements. 
  • Timely preparation of weekly “flash” reports. 
  • Assist with the annual audit to include planning, preparation of work papers and resolution of issues. Draft the annual standalone financial statements and supporting schedules and complete the GAAP checklist. 
  • Keep current on all financial accounting changes and updates that affect the organization and support the shared services team with accounting changes and implementation of GAAP guidance. 
  • Coordinate preparation of tax returns by providing financial data and analysis as required. Ensure compliance with Puerto Rico and other direct and indirect tax returns. 
  • Development of annual and 5-year plan and periodic updates of plan information. 
  • Development of operating and capital forecasts, as needed. 
  • Review BU customer contracts for proper revenue recognition (ASC 606). 
  • Review BU lease agreements to ensure compliance with company policies (operating vs financing) and appropriate accounting treatment (ASC 842). 
  • Provides leadership and BU training on organization-wide financial policies and business unit compliance. 
  • Directly supervise accounting and freight audit employees and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training and developing employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. 

 

  • Promote and champion the four pillars of TOTE; Safety, Customer Experience, Colleague Experience and Operational Excellence. 
  • Ensure procedures are in place and updated for all staff. 
  • Maintain documentation related to significant processes and internals controls. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

 

 

The ideal candidate will have:

Qualifications (Education, Experience, & Certifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. 
  • CPA license and/or MBA preferred. Public accounting experience a plus. 
  • 8+ years of experience in Finance or Accounting, 5+ in a leadership role. 
  • Prior experience with Puerto Rico regulations and tax laws preferred. 
  • History of successful collaboration across departments and other BU’s. 
  • Prior success developing and leading a team of accounting professionals. 
  • Proven ability to translate financial analysis into clear and actionable recommendations.

  • Ability to interpret complex financial data and translate analysis into actionable recommendations. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to think strategically and contribute tactically. 
  • Comfortable with influencing and educating multiple levels within the organization to achieve results. 
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines with a high degree of accuracy. 
  • Highly skilled in Excel, MS Office Suite, ERP systems and other reporting tools. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
