Position Overview

We are seeking a driven and detail‑oriented Assistant Port Engineer to support the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of our Marlin‑class vessels. This role provides hands‑on exposure to technical operations, vessel support, and warehouse management while working closely with the Port Engineer to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient vessel performance. The ideal candidate brings a solid engineering foundation, strong organizational skills, and a desire to grow into a senior technical role.

Essential Responsibilities

Vessel Maintenance & Technical Support

  • Assist the Port Engineer with planning, coordinating, and overseeing maintenance and repair activities for assigned vessels.
  • Help ensure all vessel work complies with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company procedures.
  • Support the development, execution, and improvement of preventive maintenance programs for machinery, equipment, and vessel systems.
  • Participate in troubleshooting technical issues, contributing to timely resolutions that minimize downtime.
  • Conduct routine vessel inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety risks, and areas for operational improvement.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and equipment history.

Vendor, Regulatory, and Cross‑Department Coordination

  • Coordinate with internal teams, regulatory authorities, shipyards, and external vendors to prioritize and schedule repairs, inspections, and services.
  • Assist in managing budgets for maintenance projects, spare parts, and repair activities.
  • Support procurement processes by providing technical input and monitoring vendor performance.

Warehouse & Inventory Management

  • Work with procurement and logistics partners to source parts, track orders, and ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Collaborate with operational teams to streamline warehouse processes, improve order fulfillment, and support vessel needs.

Vessel Attendance & Field Work

  • Attend vessels during port calls in Jacksonville to support maintenance activities and coordinate technical needs.
  • Participate in periodic ship rides to gain operational familiarity and maintain working knowledge of vessel systems and crew practices.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, Naval/Marine Architecture, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of vessel maintenance practices, port engineering functions, and warehouse operations.
  • Familiarity with marine industry regulations, standards, and best practices.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency with inventory management systems and maintenance record platforms.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic operational environment.

Work Environment

This role involves a mix of office work, fieldwork aboard vessels, and activity within a warehouse environment. Conditions may include exposure to noise, dust, moving equipment, and outdoor weather.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle equipment or materials during inspections and warehouse tasks.

Manual Dexterity

  • Regular use of a company‑provided computer for reporting, documentation, and communication.
