Description

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) Mate to join our maritime team. The ATB Mate will play a crucial role in supporting the Captain in the safe and efficient navigation and operation of the ATB unit. This position requires strong navigational skills, leadership abilities, and a commitment to maintaining a high standard of safety and environmental responsibility.

 Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Captain in navigating the tug in barge operation. 
  • Assume watchkeeping duties to ensure continuous monitoring of the vessel’s position, course, and speed.
  • Crew Supervision:
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of deckhands and other crew members.
  • Provide guidance and training to ensure the crew’s understanding of safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures and protocols in collaboration with the Captain.
  • Assist in conducting regular safety drills and ensure crew readiness for emergency situations.
  • Oversee cargo handling operations, including loading, and unloading procedures.
  • Ensure proper stowage and securing of cargo to maintain stability during transit.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with the Captain, crew members, and onshore management.
  • Handle radio communication and navigation equipment proficiently.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to monitor and address maintenance needs.
  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and report any issues to the Captain.
  • Maintain accurate records of navigational activities, crew duties, and safety-related documentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of voyage reports and other required paperwork.

 

Qualifications

  • Current Mate’s License (Mate of Towing, if applicable).
  • Relevant endorsements for ATB operations are advantageous.
  • Current Medical Certificate
  • LG Tankerman preferred.
  • LG Tankerman Assistant preferred. 
  • Valid passport
  • Valid TWIC
  • Ability to work safely and navigate in a marine setting; walk, sit, or stand for extended periods of time; frequently reach with hands and arms; frequently crouch or stoop; climb/descend stairs and ladders; occasionally lift and/or carry up to 60 pounds; occasionally enter and work in confined spaces; travel a minimum of 50% of the year; withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a mate on vessels, with experience in ATB operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with ATB technology and systems.
