In this position you will:

assist in the supervision and operation of both the active and  ROS (Reduced Operating Status) fleet with specific attention to safety, performance, and adherence to the laws and regulations of the countries in which documented, as well as areas where vessels trade. Perform all such duties as assigned by the Company, and specifically by the Manager, Safety Management Systems. The SMS Auditor is responsible for ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of the TOTE Services managed fleet by conducting internal audits, of both vessel and office, and providing administrative support and oversight of the companies’ safety management system. Responsible for maintaining SMS documentation and certification, evaluating SMS effectiveness, and evaluating analytics related to the health of the management system. Incumbent will frequently interface with upper levels of management shoreside and shipboard and must be able to make sound business decisions, both administrative and technical. This team member will report to the SMS Manager and work with other safety team members on special projects as well as the below-listed responsibilities.

 

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct annual SMS and HSQE internal audits onboard TOTE managed vessels.  Conducts annual security audits onboard TOTE managed vessels.  This includes travel to various locations in the U.S., as well as internationally.
  • Document audit findings and assist with updates and functionality to the Safety Management System.  
  • Assists in the implementation and administration of the companies’ Safety Management System. 
  • Recommends, manages, and revises the Safety Management System documentation pertaining to shipboard and shoreside operations, as appropriate.
  • Reviews vessel compliance with company standards and policies. Assist in the preparation of policy changes/additions for management review. 
  • Obtain, assess, and analyze data from company systems such as ABS NSE, Microsoft SharePoint and Origami to determine overall management system health and company compliance. 
  • Continually assess audit protocols and suggest improvements based on audit experience and performance outcomes. Conduct government safety survey inspections as required.
  • Assist in facilitating the master’s annual review of the SMS and implementation of follow-up action items. 
  • Assist with Safety intranet content, keeping information current and relevant to the organization. 
  • Assist with documentation archiving, as required by the SMS, and regulatory requirements. Support inquiries for historical SMS documents. 
  • Assists in the tracking and development of the Company’s Safety and Environmental Policies.
  • Coordinates the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Interface with customers and other external stakeholders on matters concerning SQE injuries, incidents, and audits. 
  • Assists with the facilitation of shoreside external (ABS) and conduct internal audits.
  • Supports operational safety as needed, to include, but not limited, to the Emergency Response Team, Heavy Weather Advisory Team, and the Continuous Improvement Working Group. 

 

 

The ideal candidate will have:

Qualifications (Education, Experience, & Certifications) – 

  1. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to comprehend, apply and discuss regulatory implementation/guidance of both USCG & ABS. Incumbents must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   2. Bachelor’s degree with at least three years related experience and/or training in the maritime field. ABS/Coast Guard regulatory experience highly desirable. Degree from maritime academy or seagoing experience in a licensed capacity or equivalent is a plus.
  3. ISM and ISO Auditor certification preferred but can be obtained during employment.
  4. Maritime Engine or Deck qualifications/license and experience preferred.
  5. Must be able to possess DOD SECRET security clearance.

  6. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, crewmembers, customers, and the general public.
  7. Knowledge of computer operation both shoreside and shipboard.
  8. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of Products, to include but not limited to, SharePoint, Outlook, Power Automate, Microsoft Forms, Teams, etc.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  No reasonable accommodations can be made to enable a disabled person to perform shipboard functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, risk of electrical shock and toxic vapors. Must travel to perform various duties to include ship visits & audits. Perform these duties acknowledging the possible dangers onboard vessels such as safely maneuvering throughout vessel(s) – i.e. ladders/staircases. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, noise level exposure can increase during visits to the vessels.
