TIR/AUTO/Cargo Clerk

Primary Purpose of Position

The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk inspects, records, and tags all breakbulk cargo. He/She also supervises auto checkers, to ensure proper/accurate documentation of dock receipts, to ensure that all cargo is embarked on its proper voyage schedule. The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk should accurately complete stuffing sheets for bulk cargo being containerized or placed on flatracks, and ensure accurate count of cargo on vessel, making sure this information accurately reflects the ship’s load plan. The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk also fills in for TIR clerks when needed during peak gate times. The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk is responsible for the training and administration of all auto checkers and assign designation of auto to flatrack assignment and oversized cargo.

The primary function of the checker is to ensure proper information is obtained and recorded for incoming and outgoing trailers, chassis, containers, flatbeds, and automotive vehicles. Inspection IAW DOT standards 49 CFR 396, 17-23 all chassis incoming and outgoing. The checker inspects for cosmetic purposes, and security purpose all incoming and outgoing automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment. Booking numbers, container numbers, chassis numbers, trailer numbers, scale numbers, shipper name, trucker name, consignors, and name size should be inspected for cosmetic purposes as well as for customs and security.

He/She will be directed by the Chief Clerk to perform other clerical duties as well as cleaning duties. This will cause prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, and climbing. Employee must be able to run, jump, and withstand physical exertion during peak operating hours. This is a multi-task-oriented position and incumbent must be able to perform well under stressful situations. Must have excellent customer service skills. Be willing to deal with a diverse group of individuals. Must know the yard layout. Must be able to complete dock receipts, inspect auto for receiving and shipment. Must know, understand and work within the safety procedures outlined.

Will also serve as vessel checker for LOLO and RORO operations when dispatched to do so. During none vessel hours and hours not utilized at the gate, the checker will be utilized as a general laborer to include, lashing and unlashing cargo spotting containers and special lift items, documentation clerk for flatrack stuffing. He/She will also serve as inventory control clerk for all lashing gear utilized in the terminal and vessel operations. He/She will report to a variety of supervisors and be able and willing to complete assigned tasks. Must be multi-task oriented.

The checker will participate in the general housekeeping of the terminal, office areas and warehouse when tasked to do so to include, sweeping, picking up, and transporting trash. This position will be utilized to pre-state all the items required to facilitate a vessel operation, warehouse operation and terminal operation. Must be willing and able to qualify in forklifts, yard hustlers and other support equipment utilized in daily routine.


Duties and Responsibilities

Cargo Inspection & Documentation

  • The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk inspects, records, and tags all breakbulk cargo.
  • Ensures proper/accurate documentation of dock receipts.
  • Ensures that all cargo is embarked on its proper voyage schedule.
  • Accurately completes stuffing sheets for bulk cargo being containerized or placed on flatracks.
  • Ensures accurate count of cargo on vessel and verifies information accurately reflects the ship’s load plan.
  • Completes dock receipts and inspects automobiles for receiving and shipment.
  • Serves as documentation clerk for flatrack stuffing.

Supervision & Training

  • Supervises auto checkers.
  • Responsible for the training and administration of all auto checkers.
  • Assigns designation of auto to flatrack assignment and oversized cargo.

Gate & Terminal Operations

  • Fills in for TIR clerks when needed during peak gate times.
  • Ensures proper information is obtained and recorded for incoming and outgoing trailers, chassis, containers, flatbeds, and automotive vehicles.
  • Performs inspections IAW DOT standards 49 CFR 396, 17-23 on all incoming and outgoing chassis.

  • During non-vessel hours and hours not utilized at the gate, serves as a general laborer.
  • Performs lashing and unlashing of cargo.
  • Spots containers and special lift items.
  • Serves as inventory control clerk for all lashing gear utilized in terminal and vessel operations.
  • Qualifies in and operates forklifts, yard hustlers, and other support equipment utilized in daily routine.

Housekeeping & Miscellaneous Duties

  • Performs clerical duties as directed by the Chief Clerk.
  • Performs cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Participates in general housekeeping of terminal, office areas, and warehouse.
  • Sweeps, picks up, and transports trash.
  • Reports to a variety of supervisors and completes assigned tasks.
  • Works within established safety procedures.

Knowledge and Skill

  • The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to decipher complex alphanumeric coding systems.
  • Should be able to operate photographic equipment.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must pass annual DOT physical.

  • The TIR/AUTO/Cargo clerk must be able to negotiate complete traffic patterns.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills.
  • Must be able to express ideas via radio/telephone devices.

Physical Requirements

  • The TIR/AUTO/Cargo Clerk should be in excellent physical condition.
  • Must pass annual DOT physical.
